Caldwell aiming to stifle Owls

- By ANDY DEAN

EXETER boss Gary Caldwell is out to silence Hillsborough today as the three-horse race for the League One title enters the final furlong.

The Grecians visit thirdplaced Sheffield Wednesday looking to damage their hopes of automatic promotion. Darren Moore’s side are a point behind Ipswich and two adrift of Plymouth. Caldwell wants his players to take advantage of any home nerves. The Scot (inset), whose side sit 14th, said: “Away from home against teams like this, we have to make it as nervous a stadium as we can – and that means not giving away early goals.

“They will come out on the front foot and get the crowd going. It’s who dictates the battle early in the game that will decide it.”

Top-of-the-table Argyle can move a step closer to the Championship if they beat Cambridge at home.

Ipswich defender Cameron Burgess (below) insists the Tractor Boys are ready for whatever Peterborough throw at them today.

He said: “They have multiple ways they can hurt you but Jonson ClarkeHarris has enjoyed another strong season for them.

“He seems to do that every year in this division. It will be a challenge but we need to be prepared for their threats all over the pitch.”

The battle to avoid joining Forest Green in League Two next season intensifies with Accrington travelling to Portsmouth and Charlton hosting Morecambe.

Rovers make the short trip to Cheltenham after their relegation was confirmed last weekend.

The play-off picture will become clearer after Barnsley host Oxford, Derby face Burton and Wycombe take on Lincoln.

Fleetwood will be playing in the third tier again next season but today’s opponents MK Dons are far less certain. Bolton host Shrewsbury and Port Vale welcome Bristol Rovers to Vale Park.

The Bristol Rovers defender Nick Anderton, 26, yesterday announced his retirement following treatment for a rare form of bone cancer.
