Police Scotland said officers will need to be clean-shaven in order to wear protective masks.

Hundreds of officers will have to shave off their beards and moustaches by the end of the month under the move.

The Scottish Police Federation said it had been “inundated with complaints” over the new policy.

Prisons minister Damian Hinds said he was in “broad agreement” with a report urging much greater use of the 50,000 people leaving jail each year.

He added: “Getting more prisoners into work really is a win-win.

“It will cut crime by reducing re-offending and grow our economy to the benefit of us all.”
