BATTLES OF THE BANDS

HIT-MAKERS’ SOUND OF VIOLENCE

-

Liam Gallagher v Noel Gallagher: The brothers’ bitter feud is the stuff of legend. Here are just a few times they clashed... In 1994 Liam whacked his brother over the head with a tambourine on stage in LA, while the following year Noel hit Liam over the head with a cricket bat during a recording session. In 2000 a row in Barcelona saw Noel punch Liam in the face and split his lip while Noel claimed that Liam attacked him with a guitar in Paris in 2009 – sparking the band’s split.

Charlie Watts v Mick Jagger: The late sticksman was enraged when Stones frontman Jagger branded him “only my drummer” while they were in Amsterdam in 1984. Watts marched up to Jagger’s hotel room, grabbed him by the lapels and punched him in the face.

Kid Rock v Tommy Lee: Both ex-husbands of Pamela Anderson, it all kicked off between the pair at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards when Lee pulled Pammy onto his lap. A fuming Rock stormed over and whacked his fellow rocker before security jumped in and parted them.

Pete Doherty v Johnny Borrell: At the 2005 Leeds Festival, Doherty marched up to the Razorlight frontman’s dressing room and headbutted him. Borrell retaliated by punching the Babyshambles star to the floor. Doherty later branded Borrell a “poisonous snake” who “deserved headbutting”.

Johnny Borrell v Andy Burrows: Borrell, below, was involved in another fight in 2008 with Razorlight drummer Andy Burrows after a drunken night out at a pub in north London. Burrows later said: “He never wanted people to know that we both wrote songs.” The pair didn’t speak for 11 years.

Kinks v Kinks: Brothers Ray and Dave Davies frequently came to blows just before The Kinks, left, took to the stage. During a 1965 gig in Cardiff, Dave wrecked drummer Mick Avory’s kit. Avory hit Dave on the head with a cymbal. He needed 16 stitches while Avory fled, convinced he’d killed him.

Sting v Stewart Copeland: The Police’s singer and drummer had a heated relationship which culminated in a brawl at the Shea Stadium in New York in 1983. Sting suffered a broken rib that required hospital treatment. The band split three years later.

Roger Daltrey v Keith Moon: Fed up with The Who’s mammoth drug-taking, in 1965 clean-living Daltrey flushed Moon’s pills down the toilet – and the drummer attacked him with a tambourine. Daltrey said: “He came at me with the bells of the tambourine. Slashing.”

IT’S not been a great week for The View but the band have apologised for the punch-up that curtailed their Manchester gig.

They postponed a London show this week after footage of Kyle Falconer hitting bassist Kieren Webster on stage went viral. Now the band have announced: “Sorry to the fans at our show in Manchester and everywhere else that we’ve upset – we had a brotherly bust-up that went too far, and we cannae wait to get back to touring.”
