BAND OF BROTHERS
ALL-ROUND top bloke Kevin Sinfield brought a lump to the throat when he carried big pal Rob Burrow over a marathon finish line on Sunday (above). Here are some other iconic moments of selfless sporting heroism... ALISTAIR AND JONNY BROWNLEE
THE British triathlon brothers were nearing the finish line at a 2016 race in Mexico when Jonny began to suffer heat exhaustion. His older brother, realising the danger, sacrificed his own victory chance to grab Jonny and help him in the final 400m to the line. Not only that, he threw Jonny over the line first so he finished second and Alistair third. DEREK
REDMOND AND HIS DAD
SPRINTING down the back straight in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics 400m semi-finals, Redmond, a GB gold medal hope, pulled up 250m from home as his right hamstring snapped. After lying on the ground in tears, he got up and started to hobble before, with a little over 100m to go, his dad Jim leapt from the stands, grabbed him and helped carry his son to the finish line.
NIKI LAUDA AND THE F1 QUARTET
LAUDA’S Ferrari burst into flames (below) and trapped the Austrian inside at the 1976 German GP. Brit Guy Edwards as well as American Brett Lunger and Harald Ertl of Austria went to save Lauda and were joined by Italy’s Arturo Merzario. They pulled Lauda from the flaming wreckage to safety.
SIMON KJAER AND CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN
WHEN team-mate Eriksen collapsed at Euro 2020 against Finland, Denmark captain Kjaer rushed to his help, signalling the medics to hurry on and keeping unconscious Eriksen’s airways clear. He then instructed his players to surround Eriksen for privacy and found his wife Sabrina in the crowd to console her.
FREDDIE FLINTOFF AND BRETT LEE
ENGLAND were celebrating beating Australia in an epic second Ashes Test in 2005, but Flintoff still found time to console rival Brett Lee after the tourists came up two runs short at Edgbaston. However, Flintoff has more recently claimed a different narrative. He said: “I like Brett Lee and he was crying. I said, ‘Mate, this is embarrassing… you’ve lost, it’s cricket, nobody cares, the trophy’s tiny, f***ing get over it’.”
