NOAKES LOOKS YVAN BETTER

- Interview by CHRIS McKENNA

SAM NOAKES showed again last weekend why we are so excited about him with a stunning performance to claim the European lightweight title.

And he did so by beating Frenchman Yvan Mendy, who showed when he overcame Luke Campbell that he will get the better of you if you’re not up for it.

Campbell is an Olympic gold medallist but lost at the first attempt to Mendy.

Sam (left) was superb throughout, he dominated the fight and was an easy winner on the cards. It was a mature performance from the Kent man as he moved to 14-0 and it further adds to the build-up to an all-British clash with fellow unbeaten foe Mark Chamberlain.

It’s a fight that may be down the road but it could fill up the O2 Arena with their fans. That will also be an interesting all-Warren clash of course.

That’s because one of my sons, Francis, manages Sam while I guide Mark’s career.

Of course, I believe both can go to the very top of the sport in this division and win world titles.

But we love putting our best prospects in with each other and seeing just who is ready now to make the next step.

This would be the perfect fight for both and there is no shame for the loser.

You don’t need an unbeaten record to reach the top. Losing can sometimes be better for you in the long run from what you learn.

Just look at James DeGale and his early loss to George Groves. Both went on to win world titles and earn a lot of money.

Of course, there will be a bit of family rivalry. While I back Sam to go all the way, I’ll want Mark to make sure I keep Francis quiet!
