Giesen, Clayvin Single Vineyard Pinot Noir, Marlborough 2013
MB 95 CP 95 PT 96 £35 Clayvin was Marlborough’s first hillside vineyard and has produced some of the region’s very best Pinot Noirs. Established in 1991 this organically farmed site is planted on complex, clay-based soils with high-density vines to produce low yields of quality grapes. The Clayvin vineyard has a reputation for producing long-lived wines that develop great complexity. Giesen purchased this 13.4ha vineyard in 2015 after sourcing grapes from it since 2011 and leasing it since 2013.
MB Real aromatic complexity, depth and purity enhanced by welljudged oak. Ample mid-palate fruit, but not at all jammy. Exquisite!
CP Intensely seductive liquorice and tar aromas then a complex palate of baked fruit and toast. The fruit undertones are precise and pure, while the smoky, chewy, peppery notes add another level of wonder.
PT Richly textured and intense black fruits are bright and vibrant and intermingle with wonderfully well-rounded oak which is enticing and warm. Spot on!
