Masciarelli Wines

The culture of Abruzzo in a glass

-

In one of Italy’s most hidden treasures, a wild region east of Rome and off the beaten track known as Abruzzo, Masciarelli winery has been producing top quality wines, oils and Grappa that reflect the amazing bio-diversity of the territory for more than 30 years.

Masciarelli Tenute Agricole expresses the richness of Abruzzo with all their products. Since foundation in the late 1970s, the winery’s vision has been to reveal the hidden potential of winemaking in Abruzzo bringing Trebbiano and Montepulciano d’Abruzzo to the forefront of Italian wine, in a continuous effort to enhance local winemaking culture and traditions. In Masciarelli “philosophy” native grape varieties are a genuine expression of the local heritage, but interpreted in a way that can be appreciated by international palate. Over time, the Masciarelli family has also added international varieties to their portfolio, like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, which have quickly become new classics.

At the same time, a crucial step has been the acquisition of parcels of vineyards in the best areas of the whole region. Dictated by a variety of natural influences – first of all the Gran Sasso and Majella massifs (up to 2.900mt a.s.l.), that occupy the inner part of the region – a significant temperature range during summer months and the abundance of rivers and underground streams, the Abruzzo climate is particularly suitable for winemaking. Soils are varied, with a

preponderance of clay and limestone in the north, limestone and gravel in the south. After a careful analysis of Abruzzo micro-zones, Gianni Masciarelli – the winery founder – identified and acquired vineyards whose features (altitude, climate, terroir) were able to enhance the character of each vine. Today Masciarelli captures Abruzzo’s diversity through a variety of vineyards and vines.

Among the reds, the Marina Cvetic Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC is now considered a classic. It’s the product of careful selection of the best Montepulciano grapes from the finest Masciarelli vineyards in San Martino Sulla Marrucina . Sited on gentle slopes laying between the mountains on one side and the sea on the other, the vineyards enjoy a perfect south-easterly exposition (450 meters a.s.l.). Sea breezes and mountain winds provide the wine with aromas and elegant notes unique to the Abruzzo region.

50 km away, in the province of Pescara, the vineyards of Loreto Aprutino occupy a beautiful hillside, about 200 meters above sea level, with clay and loam soils and a Mediterranean climate. Undoubtedly one of the best terroirs in all of Abruzzo, here wines acquire in-depth aromas and tannins, and complexity, while remaining faithful to their origins. The Gianni Masciarelli line – Montepulciano, Trebbiano and Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo – is made here: fresh, fruity and elegant wines, perfect expressions of Abruzzo’s viticultural soul.
