Domaine Jean-Louis Tissot, Crémant du Jura, France NV 90 £13.75 Yapp Bros This offering must be among the best value bottle-fermented fizzes on the market. Made entirely from Chardonnay, the 12 months of lees-ageing before disgorgeme­nt adds texture and richness to the palate and a nice counterpoi­nt to complement the crisp apple and lemon zest characters. Alc 12% Markou Vineyards, Kleftes, Attica, Greece 2016 91 £15 Southern Wine Roads Made from the local Savatiano grape. It’s mostly used for retsina in this area, but varied dry styles of Savatiano are emerging, and this example is aromatic with floral, citrus aromas and fresh crushed apple. A refreshing wine, quite pure yet full of flavour. Bottled without sulphites. Alc 12.5% Fattoria di Magliano, Pagliatura Vermentino della Maremma Toscana, Tuscany, Italy 2016 90 £15.75 Lea & Sandeman Agostino Lenci has converted to biodynamic practices on his 52ha estate. This is a pretty Vermentino showing lemon and tangerine aromas, a textured palate with fruit concentrat­ion, refreshing acidity and a nice tangy finish. Alc 12.5% Lismore, Barrel Fermented Sauvignon Blanc, Greyton, South Africa 2014 91 £14.69-£19.22 Great Wines Direct, Strictly Wine, Wineman, Wine Poole Its 11 months in oak is hardly noticeable, but adds texture, complexity and richness to offset white peach and delicate gooseberry aromas with some spice and plenty of zestiness on the finish. Alc 13.5% Compagnie de Burgondie Signé Montagny, Burgundy, France 2014 90 £9.50 Sainsbury’s From a new co-op founded in 2015, this is sourced from 30-year-old vines in the Côte Chalonnais­e. Ripe apple floral scents and lemon overtones combined with a weighty palate and refreshing acidity on the finish. Textbook Burgundy offering fabulous value. Alc 13% KWV, Glorious & Gorgeous Grenache Blanc, Western Cape, South Africa 2016 90 £7.99 Co-op Made by the leading brand in South Africa, it tastes exactly as it says on the label: glorious and gorgeous! Lovely floral and fresh style with crisp apple fruit flavours. The palate has a zippy acidity and a well-rounded mouthfeel, thanks to its 40% oak ageing. Alc 14%

Ontañon, Tierras del Isasa, Rioja, Spain 2016 90 £11 M&S Ontañon used to sell its fruit to larger companies until Gabriel Pérez Cuevas took up the reins of the family business in the 1970s. Grapes are grown on the volcanic slopes of Mount Isasa. It’s a modern white Rioja, with intense peachy and pear fruits and a hint of lemon zest. Fresh and full of flavour. Alc 12% Cave Spring, Dry Riesling, Niagara Peninsula, Canada 2013 89 £17.99 Tour de Force Wines This dry-ish but forward style is the perfect summer wine: it is crisp and vivid with peachy and floral notes jumping out of the glass. The palate shows great concentrat­ion with some sweet, ripe white fruit characters balanced by bright citrus acidity on the finish. Alc 11.5% Andrea Oberto, Vantrino Dolcetto d’Alba, Piedmont, Italy 2015 91 £16.50 Lea & Sandeman From a 16ha family-run business in La Morra, this is easy-drinking and delightful, with scented red and black cherry fruits and spice. A vibrant palate with crunchy black fruit and spicy characters balanced by firm tannins. A very enjoyable wine not to miss out on. Alc 14.5% Domaine de la Noblaie, Truly Irresistib­le, Chinon, Loire, France 2015 91 £9.99 Co-op This own-label is exactly as its name suggests: an easy-going Cabernet Franc with delicious red cherry scents with a green peppery hint. Refreshing on the palate and a touch herbaceous on the finish, it’s the perfect barbecue red, especially if served slightly chilled. Alc 13% Waimea Estate, Elara Albariño, Nelson, New Zealand 2016 90 £12.99 Majestic Not a country associated with Albariño, but more wineries are experiment­ing and the results are stunning, showing true potential. This is an aromatic delight, with jasmine and peachy fruit scents. Zesty and very quaffable, it is the perfect match for seafood or on its own on a summer day. Alc 12.5% M de Minuty, Rosé, Côtes de Provence, France 2016 90 £13 Roberson Located on the St-Tropez peninsula overlookin­g the Mediterran­ean. This is a textbook, great-value summer wine. Packed with floral notes, it is crisp, lively and fresh with lovely strawberry fruit characters, yet there is enough weight to pair with delicious summer salads. Alc 13% Celler de Capçanes, Mas Donís Negre, Catalonia, Spain 2016 91 £11.10 Burgess & Hall, D Vine Cellars, Symposium Wine Emporium Tempranill­o with Grenache and lesser amounts of Merlot, Syrah and Carignan: a little gem that will be gone before you know it. Deliciousl­y aromatic, mediumbodi­ed, notes of violets and black berries jumping out of the glass. Seductivel­y juicy. Alc 14% Domaine du Carjot, Les Capitans, Juliénas, Beaujolais, France 2015 91 £9.50 The Wine Society From a négociant that has sourced the Society’s Beaujolais for the last 50 years. Depth and opulent black fruit typical of the excellent 2015 vintage, but with elegance and charm. Its lovely tannic grip and many layers suggest this has years ahead of it, if you can wait. Alc 14%

Domaine Vincent Delaporte, Chavignol, Sancerre Rouge, Loire, France 2015 91 £18.95 Lea & Sandeman A new generation of Loire producers, such as Mathieu Delaporte, are placing greater focus on their reds. This beauty is very expressive: an elegant Pinot Noir, scented raspberry and red cherry, light in body, silky tannins, depth of flavour and superb freshness. Alc 13% 3C, Premium Selection, Cariñena, Spain 2013 90 £7.50 The Wine Society Cariñena is the name of the grape (Carignan), but also of the town where the producer is based and the DO region: hence 3C. This is a satisfying bistro-style wine: soft but flavoursom­e red with notes of black fruit and spicy oak touches. Light- to mediumbodi­ed, yet packed with individual­ity. Alc 13.5% Henry Fessy, Brouilly, Beaujolais, France 2015 90 £12.99 Waitrose Fessy has built up 70ha of vineyards across nine of the 10 Beaujolais crus. From the most southerly of them all, this is a great expression of Gamay. Full of juicy red fruit aromas, it’s refined and silky with gorgeous summer berry character. A seasonal must-buy from a stunning vintage. Alc 12.5% Tenute Rubino, Lamo Ottavianel­lo, Ostuni, Puglia, Italy 2015 90 £14.99 Old School Wines, The Bon Vivant’s Companion Ottavianel­lo is the Italian name for Cinsault. This is pretty and elegant with floral scents, red cherry and pomegranat­e fruit. It has a delicate palate with bright fruit characters and vivid acidity on the finish. A crowd-pleaser, to be enjoyed with light Italian pasta dishes. Alc 13% Masciarell­i, Marina Cvetic, Montepulci­ano d’Abruzzo Riserva, Italy 2013 91 £19.30 Tannico This family concern has grown from 2.5ha to more than 300ha since the early 1980s. Created in 1997, this flagship wine is full of character: medium-weight with black fruit flavours, firm tannins balanced by floral scents and refreshing acidity. A great all-round foodie wine. Alc 14% Blue Pyrenees Estate, Section One Shiraz, Pyrenees, Victoria, Australia 2013 90 £19.99 Laithwaite’s From the oldest section of a single block vineyard in a cool climate region. Elegant, classy wine displaying blueberry, blackberry and mint. A quantity of Viognier and Cabernet Sauvignon are co-fermented with the Shiraz, adding vivacity and freshness. Alc 14.5% Marietta Cellars, Old Vine Red, Lot Number 64, California, USA NV 90 £19 Roberson This family estate puts value for money centre stage and this bistro-style old vine Zinfandel fits the bill. It’s soft, juicy and hard to resist, combining red cherry fruit with peppery and earthy notes. Elegantly packed with juicy fruit characters and soft tannins. Alc 13.5% Château Tour Chapoux, Bordeaux Supérieur, France 2015 89 £8.99 Waitrose, Waitrose Cellar Predominan­tly Merlot, this good-value, everyday claret is bursting with bright, juicy red fruit character. Rounded and seductive on the palate with a good tannic core that gives it a nice grip on the finish. With 25% off in July, this is another good reason to stock up. Alc 13.7%
