Individual judges’ scores: Pedro Ballesteros Torres MW 95 Sarah Jane Evans MW 95 Christine Parkinson 95 £32.70 Bibendum PLB, Exel Also known locally as Carnaz and Godello Tinto, Merenzao is one and the same as the Jura’s Trousseau. Quite possibly transported from eastern France during a monastic pilgrimage, the grape is clearly at home on the local schist, or losa. This is from 80-year-old vines grown on the small terraces ( solcacos) cut into the steep hillsides along the banks of the River Sil. Fernando Gonzáles Riverio and Ana Pérez have been tending their 11ha of local varieties for more than 30 years. The wine is fermented with wild yeasts using 100% whole clusters.

Pedro Ballesteros Torres MW Discreet and elegant in its cherry fruit aromas, concentrated yet smooth and suave in the mouth. Delicious.

Sarah Jane Evans MW Superbly exciting, with loads of perfumed fruit on the nose despite its deceptively pale colour, while being thrillingly fresh yet delicate in the mouth with a textured, lightly tannic finish.

Christine Parkinson Pretty aromas of cut flowers and wild strawberry. The palate is a little more savoury, with notes of toast and nutshells accompanying berry fruit. Long yet soft and supple.
