TRIBUTES have been paid to a Derbyshire grandfather who was killed when a rock crashed through his car windscreen.

Steven Oscroft, of Shirebrook, was driving his car when a large rock or piece of concrete went through the windscreen of his Hyundai car.

The 60-year-old died at the scene. It is likely he was killed instantly. His wife and two grandchildren, who were in the car with him, were unhurt.

Mr Oscroft’s family have paid tribute to the grandfather of four, saying: “Steve was a devoted, husband, father, son and brother and a doting grandad. He was genuine and kind and well-loved by all who knew him.

“As a family we are struggling to comprehend the tragic end which resulted after a trip out and fun time with the grandchildren, our lives will never be the same again and we can now only cherish those special memories in our hearts.”

His family has asked for privacy as they come to terms with their loss.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened in Netherfield Lane, Perlethorpe cum Budby, near Ollerton, Nottinghamshire on Tuesday.

Family liaison officer PC Joanna Baxter, of Nottinghamshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Mr Oscroft’s family are devastated by his death in such tragic circumstances and it was obviously an incredibly traumatic ordeal for his wife and two grandchildren. Thankfully they escaped unhurt.

“We are working hard to establish how the incident happened to give the family some answers and we would appeal to anyone who may have information that may help the inquiry to come forward as soon as possible. We are particularly appealing for anyone that may have seen a large beige-coloured cabbed truck that may be discarding its load in the area around the time of the collision. We are also appealing for any dash-cam footage which may show this vehicle.”

Anyone who has information which could help the investigation is being urged to call Nottinghamshire

Police on 101, quoting incident number 275 of July 7, 2020. Local politicians in the area have reacted to the accident. Councillor John Peck, who represents neighbouring Edwinstowe on Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “This is a shocking accident for everybody. Most motorists have seen things falling off lorries or cars, but I have never witnessed or heard of anything as serious as this. My thoughts go out to the family concerned in this almost freak accident.” Councillor Neal Mitchell, whose Ollerton ward on Newark and Sherwood District Council is where the accident took place, described Mr Oscroft’s death as tragic. “This sort of thing could happen to anyone, hopefully the police get to the bottom of what has happened. It is tragic,” he said. “Thank you to the local services for working on the incident, attending this is a difficult job in itself. My thoughts go out to his family at this time.”

We are struggling to comprehend the tragic end which resulted after a trip out and fun time with the grandchildren.
