Borrowing a friend’s car to pop to shops ends in disaster

-

A HAPLESS driver’s trip to the shops in a borrowed car ended with him having to walk home after police caught him without insurance and seized the car.

The motorist also did not have a licence when he decided to borrow his friend’s car to pop to the shops on Wednesday.

Officers were already in the shop in Midway collecting CCTV when they spotted the black BMW and checked out the driver. They found he did not have insurance to drive it and seized the car, leaving the driver to walk home and explain to his friend where it was.

Details were posted on Swadlincote police’s safer neighbourhood team’s Facebook page which read: “This driver was unlucky enough to pop to the shop that our boys were collecting CCTV from. Maybe if he hadn’t decided to borrow his mate’s car while having no licence and no insurance it may have been a better trip for him.”

He was the third of three uninsured drivers stopped by officers that evening. The first was a Mazda driver who was stopped after patrolling officers smelt cannabis on the A444 in Overseal. Police found he had no insurance. He had to walk five miles home after his car was seized, too.

The team’s Twitter post said: “It was pot luck that we found this Mazda with our very own Batman and Robin (PCSO Jamie Gutberlet and PCSO Reece Beattie) only running it through after catching a whiff of cannabis. In a joint effort, the vehicle was stopped and the driver spoken to.

“Unfortunately for him cannabis was not the only thing he didn’t have, his lack of insurance leaving him high and dry and with a good five-mile walk home. Not the lift home his mate expected.”

In a third incident, officers stopped a Ford Focus driver who was on his way to the police station to be interviewed. He was smoking cannabis on the way and had no licence or insurance.

The post read: “Being stopped on the way to the station threw interview plans to pot, particularly after he handed over a joint to officers as well as driving without a licence and insurance.”
