I was so excited I forgot to take a photo

-

READING in Bygones about the visit of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip brought back memories (“Princess’s first visit to city was draped in Royal glory”, July 6).

We were married on June 25, 1949 at Frome in Somerset and came to live with my husband’s parents in Cummings Street.

I was told of the impending visit at the time and decided to go and join the crowds.

I remember standing outside Birds’ cake shop in Normanton Road with my Brownie Box camera which I still have. The cry of “They’re coming” prompted me to join the rush to the pavement edge. I was so excited that I forgot to take the photograph.

I can just imagine, when my family heard of my experience, that most of Frome were informed. I am now 92 years old. Last year we celebrated our 70th wedding anniversary and received a beautiful card and photographs from the Queen. Lovely memories to treasure, so thank you Derby Telegraph.
