Third positive case at virus-hit academy

-

A DERBY secondary school has confirmed a third case of Covid-19 among its sixth-form pupils.

Chellaston Academy announced on Wednesday, September 16, that all children in Year 12 and Year 13 must self-isolate for two weeks.

After two positive cases were recorded in Year 12, the school has now confirmed there is a further case within Year 13.

The Swarkestone Road school confirmed the news in a letter sent out to parents and carers, which was also posted on its website.

The statement, released on Friday, reads: “To date, we now have been informed of two confirmed cases within Year 12, and unfortunately can now confirm a further case within Year 13.

“We have followed the track and trace procedures and are continuing to work closely with Public Health England following their latest advice. As this case is also within the KS5 bubble, the measures taken on Wednesday remain in place.

“Public Health England are still advising that family members do not need to isolate unless they become symptomatic, in which case they would need to book a Covid-19 test.

“The school continues to remain open for all other year groups and your child should continue to attend if they remain well.”

The statement, written by head teacher Ryan Metters, went on to provide advice to parents regarding what to do if their child develops symptoms of Covid-19.

Mr Metters’ letter added: “Students in the academy, and those who have been accessing remote learning, have been a real credit to themselves and their family, and have been working extremely hard over the last two weeks.

“The safety of our students, staff and wider community continues to be our number one priority. We will keep you updated via all communication channels and again, thank you for your continued support.”
