Driver bragged car chase was ‘like something from a movie’
A SPEEDING driver who bragged that a police chase around Derby he led was “like something out of a Hollywood movie” has escaped an immediate prison term.
A judge told Yasar Hussain it was only because the 32-year-old has stayed out of trouble for 17 months since the offence and the delay in the case coming to court that stopped him being sent to jail.
In March, his hearing was told how the defendant crashed ed his car into an innocent driver r pulling out of a side street t in Normanton during the e pursuit.
Hussain fled on foot and was caught, and on his way to a police station he boasted about the “beautiful scenes” he had just experienced.
Earlier this year, Huss sain’s sentence was adjourned and delayed d by the coronavirus pandemic.
Handing him a 14-month jail term, suspended for two years, Judge Shaun Smith QC said: “Your driving was disgraceful. For reasons best known to yourself, when you realised you were being chased by the police, off you went.
“People had to jump out of the way and eventually you crashed, tried to run off and then bragged about it.”
Lucy Jones, prosecuting at Derby Crown Court in March, said the incident took place on April 30, 2019.
Police tried to stop the black VW Golf being driven by Hussain who, rather than stop, accelerated away. She said: “It began in St Chads Road and saw him speed at more than 40mph down tight residential streets with cars parked on both sides.
“The car went into Lower Dale Road and there it did not stop at a roundabout where there were pedestrians. One was crossing and the defendant had to swerve to avoid him.
“At the junction of Normanton Road and Rosehill Street, the defendant jumped a red light. At the Jamia Mosque there were people gathered and he drove through its rear ca car park and on to Whita Whitaker Street.
““Still driving in ex excess of 40mph, he d drove into Rosehill S Street where a Ford Ka was pulling out of a side street. “The defendant drove straight into the side of it forcing it to crash into a wall and hitting a parked car.” Hussain, of Rosehill Street, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving. His previous convictions include dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, aggravated vehicle taking, failing to stop for police, driving without insurance or a licence, possession of cannabis, possession of an offensive weapon and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Matt Hayes, mitigating, said on the night of the offence his client was working as a delivery driver and on seeing the police he “panicked”. Hussain was ordered to carry out 200 hours’ unpaid work and was disqualified from driving for two years.
