TWO Derby thugs savagely assaulted a man, leaving him with multiple fractures in a brutal revenge attack.

Derby Crown Court heard how Gary Baggett and Dale Pryde meted out their own violent punishment in retaliation for an incident involving the victim and a tomahawk.

The pair, aged 25 and 31, used a metal bar, a knuckleduster and a knife on the man, leaving him with a fractured skull, jaw, eye socket, nose and a deep cut to his leg.

Baggett then bragged about the injuries they had caused, boasting that the police did not have enough evidence against to arrest them.

But a half-brother of Pryde went to the police and told them everything he had heard about the e incident.

Jailing the pair for a combined total of 12 years ars and seven months, s, Judge Shaun Smith QC said: “The fact of the matter is this was a revenge attack and a pretty sustained one causing extensive injuries.

“There was a bro- ken eye socket, a fraccture at the base of his skull, a broken jaw, a fractured nose and a laceration to h his leg.

“You, Baggett, appeared to be proud of what you had done telling people there was a lack of evidence against you.

“But that soon evaporated. “There is clearly a background to this and that there is information he (the victim) had carried out something involving a tomahawk axe.”

Gurdial Singh, prosecuting, said the assault happened in Leyland Gardens, off Kedleston Road, on June 14.

He said the victim had met Baggett when they were both serving prisoners at HMP Ranby and had been staying with him.

Mr Singh said that, on the night of the assault, Pryde arrived at a flat and he and Baggett went into an address.

He said the victim went into to enquire what was happening and was sworn at and told to leave.

Mr Singh said: “He did that and that is the last recollection he has before waking up at the Royal Derby Hospital.

“Mr Pryde’s half-brother later described how there had been an earlier issue involving the complainant and a tomahawk axe and that Pryde wanted to get revenge.

“He said after the assault he heard both defendants saying how they had ‘done it’ which he took to be a reference to the attack.”

Mr Singh said that, the following morning, Baggett told Pryde’s halfbrother he had been told the victim suffered six broken ribs and a broken eye socket.

He said: “He appeared to be bragging about the injuries he and Pryde had caused, saying the police did not have enough evidence against him.

“He said they used a metal bar, a knuckleduster and a knife.” Mr Singh s said both men were arrested and interviewed with Pryde P saying he was not at the address w where the assault h happened and Baggett answering “no comment” to questions he was asked.

But Pryde, of P Prince William Dr Drive, Mackworth, plea pleaded guilty to malicious wounding with intent to c cause grievous bodily lh harm and d a separate charge of possessing cannabis. He was jailed for six years.

David Webster, mitigating, said his client has three young children aged two, five and seven.

He said: “He fell prey to Mamba, which he tells me is the worst drug of all of them.

“By far and away his most important mitigation is his early and timely guilty plea.”

Baggett, of London Road, pleaded guilty to the same charges and also to separate counts of assaulting an emergency worker, criminal damage and public order from separate, less serious incidents, in Derby.

He was jailed for six years and seven months with his barrister, Chris Aspinall, telling the court: “It was undoubtedly a revenge attack on the complainant.

“He regrets his actions and is sorry about the serious injuries.”

The fact of the matter is this was a revenge attack and a pretty sustained one.
