- By MARTIN NAYLOR

FOOTBALLERS on a Derby park were forced to scatter when a driver chased after his girlfriend in a jealous rage.

Aaron Morgan drove at the terrified woman and the players she had run towards seeking help.

A JEALOUS boyfriend from Derby y forced a group of footballers to scatter as he drove at them at speed while in a rage with his partner.

Moments earlier Aaron Morgan had deliberately braked hard while hurtling through Mackworth knowing his girlfriend was not wearing a seat belt and causing her to smash her face on the dashboard.

Derby Crown Court heard how she fled and sought help from the e sportsmen, which is when the 26-year-old drove at them all.

Some had to hide behind barriers, , while one later told police that had d he not been running as fast as he e was, he would have been struck by y Morgan’s car.

Despite her ordeal, the sentencing hearing was told how she wishes to remain in a relationship with Morgan, who is from Mackworth.

Jailing him for 15 months, , Recorder Martin Hurst said: “On July y 10 you went with your partner to a public house where she drank rather r more than you. What is clear from what happened is that you are a jealous man, jealous of relationships you believed your partner was having.

“She was socialising with others – you went outside and someone said something to you.

“You then put her in the car and drove off and you drove dangerously.

“You were driving too fast, you were shouting at her, demanding to know who she had been sleeping with. There is evidence that while driving fast you put your brakes on hard, knowing she was not wearing a seat belt, causing her to smash her face against the dashboard.

“But that was not the end of it. She got out of the car, ran away and you went into a rage.

“You tried to get back her into the car and she tried to seek help from people playing football on a local park. You drove at her and you drove at the witnesses, who had to flee behind barriers to get away.

“One witness said had he not been running as fast as he was, you would have run into him.”

Recorder Hurst said eventually Morgan and his partner got to their home, where he carried on accusing her of seeing other men. He said the police were called and Morgan was arrested.

He later pleaded guilty to one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm relating to him deliberately braking hard and injuring the woman’s face.

He also pleaded guilty to a second count of dangerous driving in Prince Charles Avenue. Morgan, of Dorking Road, appeared for the hearing over a video link from HMP Lincoln. He has previous convictions for violence and breaching court orders.

Joe Harvey, mitigating, said his client has worked in the same job for 10 years and outlined to the court how the victim does not wish to seek a restraining order against her partner.

He said: “She has written a reference in support of him for this hearing and wishes to remain in a relationship with him.

“Since he has been remanded into custody he has suffered with anxiety and depression.

“He knows he should not have allowed his anger and jealously to get the better of him.”

You drove at her and you drove at the witnesses, who had to flee behind barriers to get away.
