Dolan off bench to be Cup hero

CALLUM Dolan left the bench to fire Matlock Town into the FA Cup third qualifying round.

The substitute scored the Gladiators’ winner in the 79th minute as they won 1-0 away against Grantham Town in a tough, physical second qualifying round clash.

Mickleover cruised through after a 4-1 home win against Newark, who missed an early penalty.

Stuart Beavon got the ball rolling for Mickleover with a 33rd-minute opener and after the break the home side knocked out Newark with a brace from Andrew Wright and Declan Bacon’s 90th-minute strike, the visitors then grabbing a late consolatio­n.

Ilkeston Town also won 4-1 to reach the third qualifying round after falling behind at home against Hanley Town.

Nial Cope gave Hanley a 21st-minute lead but Zak Goodson levelled in the 34th minute and Nat Watson made sure the Robins were ahead at half-time with a shot into the top corner eight minutes before the break.

Hanley had a great chance to equalise in the 72nd minute but Robins keeper Ross Durrant saved a penalty and, eight minutes from the end, Goodson was on target again to make it 3-1.

Alex Troke’s penalty for the Robins completed the scoring.

Alfreton Town struck twice in the first half to win 2-1 away against Coalville Town in their second qualifying round clash.

Dom Smith pounced in the second minute for the Reds to open the scoring and Jake Day doubled the advantage in the 21st minute.

Coalville were awarded a penalty in the 63rd minute but George Willis saved Billy Kee’s spot kick. The home side did pull a goal back a minute later but the Reds held on for the win.

In the NPL South East Division,

Belper Town won 2-1 away against Glossop North End thanks to goals from Sam Wright and Piteu Crouz.

In the Midland League Premier Division, Gresley won 3-2 at home against Haughmond, while Long Eaton United beat visiting Racing Club Warwick 1-0.

It was a happy day on the road for Belper United as they crushed

Borrowash Victoria 5-0 in the East Midlands Counties League, while Heanor Town won 4-0 at home against Ingles and Graham Street Prims won 2-0 away against Teversal.
