Could you give a pet a home?

- By NOAH MARTIN noah.martin@reachplc.com

AS the winter months draw in and the prospect of a second lockdown looms, it might be the right moment to find a furry friend who can keep you company during the long nights.

This month, the RSPCA in Derby are running an Adoptober campaign to encourage people to give a forever home to some adorable animals.

During the coronavirus pandemic, the Derby branch - in Abbey Street - has struggled to get funding and resources have become more limited.

A branch spokesperson said: “We want to ensure our animals are comfortable and can live a pain-free life.

“We currently have a number of animals that require our help, support and access to veterinary care. These include ailments such as skin allergies, abscess treatment, neurological treatment and dental treatment. ment. Many of the animals that are brought into us by inspectors ctors are in a sorry state and need immediate vet care and ongoing oing treatment.

“We rely entirely on the supupport and generosity of the he public to help the animals s staying at Abbey Street. Our r vet fees on a yearly basis cost in the region of £60,000 – approximately £5,000 every month.”

The branch is running a fundraising campaign which ch can be donated to at justgivgiving. com/ campaign/ adoptoptober2020.

There are plenty of lovely pets looking for forever homes s in Derby and here just a few.

MILO

“Marvellous Milo came into Abbey Street after his owner had a change of circumstances and could sadly no longer keep him, despite wanting to very much.

“Milo enjoys playing in the dog exercise yard with the team, especially if you have a ball to throw for him. He is a smart lad who knows his basic commands and also sneakily knows how to open doors.

“He will require some ongoing training to fine tune his skills. Milo would be suited to a home with adults only as he is an enthusiastic boy who needs training and gaining some focus, he can be quite bouncy.

“Milo has lived with dogs in the past but will need a little assistance learning to meet and greet new dogs. He would prefer to be an only pet.

“Milo will be very rewarding for someone who has plenty of time and energy but also loves to snuggle.”

OSCAR

“This gorgeous boy was abandoned. He was very thin when found and suffering with a skin condition.

“With some good food and some much needed TLC by the Animal Care Team he is ready to be rehomed. Oscar would like his new home to be quite quiet and with adults only.

“He enjoys to exercise but also will need time to relax. While out on walks Oscar walks well, he does pull at times but usually when excited or he catches a scent of something nice.

“He greets dogs politely and will engage in a little play but would prefer to live on his own with no other pets.

“Due to him being abandoned we don’t know much about Oscar’s back story, what we are sure of though is he is a sweet boy but he is not enjoying kennel life at all.

“He will need some guidance in some areas but will reward any effort ten fold.”

TONY ROGER

“Tony Roger arrived at Abbey Street as a long term stray and after spending so many months on the street he has become quite wary of people - but when he can trust you he is the soppiest cat around.

“He loves chin scratches and will seek out contact from his most trusted human companion. Tony Roger finds loud noises scary but the more he gets comfortable in a home environment these noises will become second nature.

“Due to his slightly nervous nature he would prefer to be the only pet in the household. Please give Tony Roger a chance, you won’t regret it.”

AMELIA HOPPINS

“Amelia Hoppins is friendly girl who enjoys being with people but would really benefit from a rabbit companion. At only 12 weeks old Amelia Hoppins arrived at Abbey Street after her owner could sadly no longer look after her.

“Amelia is in great health and will be vaccinated, chipped and neutered before she is rehomed.”

LINDA AND NICK

“Linda and Nick are lovely cats who need a peaceful quiet home to spend the rest of their days. They arrived at Abbey Street after their owner was moving house and sadly could not take the pair.

“These two lovebirds have been together a long time and would hate to be parted so are looking for a home together. Both cats enjoy sunbathing, snuggling and watching the world go by.”
