Sarah surpised by her rapid rise

A WHIRLWIND rise to the top for Sarah Glenn has been capped by being named the NatWest PCA Women’s Player of the Year.

It is less than a year since the 21-year-old from Loscoe made her international debut for England.

But but such is the impact she has made, as a leg-spinner and powerful middle-order batsman, that she was named player of the series in the 5-0 T20 series win against West Indies at Derby last month and has now beaten England captain Heather Knight and all-rounder Nat Sciver to the player of the year prize.

“It’s still a bit of a shock,” said Glenn. “I don’t think it happens that often that you make your debut and things change so quickly.

“I knew I wanted to be in the England side one day but I didn’t know if I was going to or how long it was going to take, so for everything to have moved so quickly and to get this, I’m just going to really enjoy It.

“It’s taken me by surprise how quickly things have escalated. I have loved every moment of it and tried not to look too far ahead.

“With cricket, and sport in general, you have a lot more bad days than good days, so I am just going to try and enjoy the moment.

“It’s pretty special that it was voted for by the girls, knowing that they’ve got my back. To know that I’ve won it and deserved it is very special.

“Anything I’ve been unsure about I’ve just asked the girls, so credit to them as well.”

England all-rounder Chris Woakes took the NatWest PCA men’s award after he played a starring role in England’s Test series wins over West Indies and, in particular, Pakistan, with his match-winning 84 in the first Test at Emirates Old Trafford one of the highlights of the summer.

Zak Crawley was named Vitality PCA Young Player of the Year after excelling in his first English Test summer, a magnificent double century against Pakistan at the Ageas Bowl underlining the 22-year-old’s fast-growing reputation.
