Two city schools report cases of Covid-19

-

TWO Derby schools have reported that either pupils or people within the school community have tested positive for coronavirus.

West Park School, in Spondon, and Village Primary Academy, in Sunny Hill, have taken measures to protect staff and pupils from further infections.

West Park School headteacher Scott McGregor has issued a letter to parents confirming a Year 8 pupil has been infected with the virus.

The Spondon school remains open but a “small number” of pupils who were in close contact with the pupil have also been told to self-isolate for 14 days, as per Government guidelines.

The letter to parents of children at the Spondon school, which can be seen on the school’s website, says: “We have been advised by Public Health England that there has been a confirmed case of Covid-19 within the school.

“This relates to a pupil who is currently in Year 8.

“We know that you may find this concerning but we are continuing to monitor the situation and are working closely with Public Health England.

“This letter is to inform you of the current situation and provide advice on how to support your child.

“Please be reassured that for most people, coronavirus (Covid-19) will be a mild illness. The small number of children who have been in close contact with the individual who has tested positive for coronavirus (Covid-19) have received a letter informing them that their child must stay at home for 14 days.

“The school remains open and your child should continue to attend as normal if they remain well.”

Village Primary Academy, in Sunny Hill, has reported that two people within the school community had contracted the virus and some staff and children are now self-isolating.

A statement from chief executive Anthony Hughes said: “The safety of our children, families and staff is paramount.

“On Sunday 27th September and Monday 28th September 2020 we were informed that two members of our school community have tested positive for Covid-19.

“They, and any close contacts are self-isolating at home for 14 days. This includes staff and children in the class bubble they were working in.

“Prior to opening in September, the leadership at Village Primary Academy put in place extensive measures to ensure that we keep all members of our community safe.

A Derbyshire secondary school told an entire year group to stay at home after a child caught coronavirus.

Year 11 students at Belper School and Sixth Form Centre were yesterday told they would not be allowed into school. The school said this was a temporary measure while additional safety precautions are put in place, and that it expects most Year 11 students to be back in school today.
