Derbyshire’s coronavirus hotspots are revealed

-

NEARLY 20 local areas within Derbyshire and Derby had 20 or more new cases of Covid-19 in the most recent week.

The rate of new cases across the county and city has been surging over the past month, with around a third of Derbyshire’s population now in Tier 2 restrictions.

There are three key hotspot areas within Derbyshire which have a particularly concentrated number of Covid-19 cases.

These are Glossopdale – which was put into Tier 2 last week – alongside Long Eaton in Erewash and Dronfield in North East Derbyshire. Each of these borders a metropolitan area either in Tier 3 or about to be.

Glossopdale abuts Tameside in Greater Manchester, which is now in Tier 3; Dronfield adjoins Sheffield which will be in Tier 3 from today; and Long Eaton connects to Nottinghamshire.

Glossopdale’s four local areas:

Hadfield East & Tintwistle (16 cases); Hadfield West & Gamesley (33 cases); Dinting, Simmondley & Charlesworth (33 cases); and Glossop (46 cases) have combined for 128 new cases in the week to October 16.

Glossop is the only local area with more than 40 cases in the whole of Derbyshire and Derby and Hadfield

West & Gamesley and Dinting Simmondley & Charlesworth join it as the only areas to have surpassed 30 cases.

The four Long Eaton areas: Long Eaton South (23 cases); Long Eaton North (21 cases); Long Eaton Town (21 cases); and Long Eaton West (16 cases) have totalled 81 cases together in the most recent week.

Dronfield’s three local areas: Dronfield South & Gosforth Lane (27 cases); Dronfield Woodhouse & Holmesfield (24 cases); and Dronfield Town & Unstone have combined for 74 cases in the week to October 16.

There were 1,975 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Derbyshire in the week October 13-19, nearly double the number it saw two weeks before (September 25 to October 5) when it had 1,057 cases. Of the 1,975 cases in Derbyshire, 429 were in Derby, nearly double the number it saw two weeks before, when it had 225 cases.

Data for more recent days is still subject to change and is not yet fully reliable, for example, cases reported yesterday may be spread evenly over three days – to the day those cases occurred.

Comparisons to the peak of the pandemic for community cases of Covid are not possible due to there being no community testing programme at the time.

Derbyshire surpassed 300 cases in a day for the first time on October 19 with 381 new cases reported.

For comparison, on October 1 the county as a whole saw 146 new cases – less than half.

Here are each of the Derbyshire areas that have seen 20 or more new Covid-19 cases in the week to October 16: Glossop 46; Hadfield West & Gamesley 33; Dinting, Simmondley & Charlesworth 33; Clowne & Barlborough 31; Sandiacre & Stanton 29; Little Chester 29; Dronfield South & Gosforth Lane 27; Heanor South & Shipley Park 27; Hallam Fields & Greenwood Avenue 27; Chellaston East 26; Chellaston West & Shelton Lock 24; Dronfield Woodhouse & Holmesfield 24; North Wingfield & Pilsley 23; Dronfield Town & Unstone 23; Long Eaton South 23; Oakwood 22; Long Eaton North 21; Long Eaton Town 21; Littleover East & Heatherton 20.
