NEW photos of Derby’s Moorways swimming complex have been released, showing that work is progressing despite the pandemic.

Building work on the new swimming pool complex got under way in February, with the project now scheduled to be completed in spring 2022.

The new water park will feature a 50m swimming pool, England’s first state-of-the-art WOW Wave Ball, two four-storey flumes and a learner pool.

When completed, Moor ways Sports Village, as it is called, will also have gyms and fitness studios, a soft play area, meeting rooms and a café.

The 10-lane 50m x 25m pool can be divided into three 25m pools if needed using moving floors and walls. By the pool, there will also be seating for 450 spectators, as well as for 300 competitors.

Jonathan Gisbourne, project manager for contractor Bowmer and Kirkland, said: “We are making good progress on site. The steel frame for the leisure water area started today and will take a couple of weeks to erect.

“The tank for the 50m pool is 75% complete and will be finished by the end of January.

“The Derby public can look forward to the new Moorways Sports Village opening in spring 2022.” Councillor Robin Wood, the city council’s portfolio holder for leisure, culture and tourism, confirmed that the £42 million budget for the project is still on track. He said: “I’m very pleased that the project is being delivered on time and within budget. I can’t wait to jump in the deep end!

“I’m also very grateful to the developers and the contractors for doing so well in such difficult times, not just in dealing with Covid-19 but as far back as the floods from last year.”
