Man dies after being rescued from bungalow fire
AN elderly man has died following a fire at his bungalow in Ilkeston.
Fire crews from Ilkeston, Heanor and Nottinghamshire’s Eastwood station responded to the call made at 7.49am yesterday.
The 89-year-old was rescued by firefighters, who entered his home in Rossendale wearing breathing apparatus to save him from the flames.
Once he was safe, they carried out first aid before paramedics took him to hospital, where he later died.
Group manager of Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, Adam Bleakman, said: “Earlier this morning firefighters rescued an elderly gentleman from a fire in a bungalow on Rossendale in Ilkeston.
“Tragically, despite the efforts of Firefighters and East Midlands Ambulance Service we have been informed that the gentleman sadly passed away later this morning.”
An initial investigation into the cause of the fire found that the most likely explanation was an electrical appliance and the fire is being treated as accidental.
Mr Bleakman said firefighters and community safety officers would be in Ilkeston talking to residents and providing reassurance and fire safety advice.
He confirmed that officers from the Derbyshire Constabulary and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service are preparing reports for the coroner.
Mr Bleakman said: “The thoughts of everyone at Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service are with the family and friends of the deceased at this distressing time.”
