Don’t tar everyone with same brush

-

I AM writing in response to M W Blurton’s letter “Corbyn’s return is a blight on Labour” (November 21).

While I agree with the fact tougher measures should be made for those who abuse lockdown restrictions, I object to the comment, “the exception for health reasons should be scrapped for wearing of masks”. Also the writer says, “if you’re well enough to go shopping, wearing a mask for a short time shouldn’t be an issue”.

Some people don’t have facilities to order delivery of groceries, nor anyone to get food in for them.

I have a respiratory illness that is chronic. I tried wearing a mask in a store. After a while I couldn’t breathe with my airways covered while walking around the shop.

I had to leave and get outside to get air. This distressed me as I really wanted to be compliant with the rules and protect others.

I’d bought assorted coloured masks to match clothes I wore and looked to include the mask, not only to protect people, but look smart and a fashion statement. I saw a mask as a necessary part of attire.

I now wear a sunflower ribbon and a have a printed statement provided by an NHS worker, around my neck, to show I am exempt.

I also attend an adult education class to help keep my sanity as I suffer with mental health.

I am fortunate to have a carer do my shopping – a task I’m happy not to have to do, especially in these times. However, many don’t. Also, shopping could be someone’s only outing and exercise.

Therefore I plead with people like Mr Blurton to have more compassion for us and not to tar us with the same brush as those abusing the regulations.
