Late agony at Portman Road but Buxton says there’s no question about Brewers’ character

BOSS: PLAYERS AREN’T DOING MUCH WRONG

-

JAKE Buxton praised the character of his Burton Albion players despite a frustrating 2-1 home defeat against Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Tuesday night.

The Brewers looked on course for a point until Emyr Huws’ stooping 80th-minute header secured a 2-1 win for the home side.

Keanan Bennetts opened the scoring in the fourth minute for Ipswich when Oli Hawkins won the ball in the air.

It fell to Kayden Jackson who played in Bennetts and the latter made no mistake as his low shot ended up in the corner of the net.

But the Brewers struck back midway through the first half when Joe Powell converted a cross from Colin Daniel.

However, Huws swooped with 10 minutes remaining to end the Brewers’ four-game unbeaten run and keep them at the bottom of League One.

Brewers manager Buxton said: “We are disappointed with the result as in the position we are in we are looking for points but overall the performance was good.

“The lads were disappointed with the goals we conceded but we created opportunities, played some good football and the togetherness and attitude is correct.

“We conceded in the first passage of play for Ipswich, a long ball and we didn’t quite deal with it and it was a classy finish.

“But there is no question about the character in the group and we responded well, scoring a cracking goal ourselves after that.”

It was a messy goal at the end that cost the Brewers with the ball bouncing around in the penalty area.

“We talk about first contact and trying to stop crosses coming into your box, especially when the opposition has a 6ft 4 centre forward,” Buxton added.

“We allowed a ball to come into the box, Sam Hughes did get first contact but we didn’t get the height and distance and then en there was a little bit of a mix-up. up.

“Kieran O’Hara makes kes a great save and we e aren’t alive to the second ball.

“But overall in terms of the performance, what the lads are showing on a daily basis in training and going into the past five games I’m m happy with that as we aren’t doing much wrong. ng.

“I know the position we are in and the table doesn’t lie. We know we need points.”

Albion could have rescued a point in the 89th minute when Lucas Akins had a clear chance but stabbed the ball over the bar.

“Luc “Lucas is kicking hims himself and is a littl little bit down as he knows th the position we are in and he has been at the club a l long time,” sa said Buxton. “We had a lot of opportunities on Saturday to get th three points. “Tonight “Tonight, was a bit more against the run of play. It’s one of those things and we have to move onto the next game.

“We have a big game on Saturday (at home against Doncaster Rovers) and we are looking for three points.”
