Yellow weather warning is issued for ice across county

-

A WEATHER warning for ice was been issued across large parts of Derbyshire last night.

The Met Office urged people to take care when travelling after issuing a yellow warning as temperatures were set to fall again overnight.

The warning came into effect at 6pm last night and was set to last until 11am today. It covers large parts of the county, including larger urban areas such as Derby, Chesterfield, Ilkeston, Long Eaton and Belper.

It also encompasses large parts of the Peak District and is set to edge onto places such as Ashbourne, Buxton and Glossop. People were being warned that rainfall last night, as well as melting snow, could freeze over in the morning, causing treacherous conditions. Forecasters say they are expecting icy patches to form on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, which could lead to slips and falls. The Met Office said: “Icy patches are expected to develop, especially on untreated surfaces, where snow has been melting on Sunday and where frequent showers occur through the night.

“Further hill snow is also possible above 200-300m, though less extensively than last night.”

It comes a day after dozens of people had to be rescued from their vehicles when a snowstorm left them stranded in the Peak District.

Police officers and volunteers spent hours collecting people stuck in the highest parts of the county after heavy snow left them unable to move. ■Forecast map, P24
