A DRINK-DRIVER fled from the scene of a horrific crash in Derby, leaving his injured female passenger.

Daniel Goodyer had also taken drugs as well as drinking half a bottle of vodka when he lost control of his car.

Derby Crown Court was told how the Seat was travelling so fast along Boulton Lane, in Alvaston, that it propelled a lamppost it hit 50 metres down the road.

But rather than help the injured woman who had fallen across his lap the 29-year-old left the scene.

Jailing the Chellaston father for a year, Recorder Paul Mann QC said: “I make it clear that I regard this as so serious only a custodial sentence can follow.

“You were drinking from a litre bottle of vodka, on your own account. You got in a car and failed to take a bend in the road and struck a lamppost.

“She (the passenger) toppled over on to you and says she briefly lost consciousness.

“She was in a lot of pain but you made off without reporting the collision.

“I have heard how she now suffers flashbacks and she has developed a fear of getting into cars.”

N Noel l Phil Philo, prosecuting, i said id the h incident took place at around 1pm on April 20.

He said Goodyer, of Leveret Close, had been out earlier that day helping people in his local area who were confined to their homes due to the first lockdown.

Mr Philo said Goodyer had collected shopping for them and afterwards was with the woman and started drinking vodka. He said: “He was driving the young woman home and was travelling down a narrow residential street in Derby which had a speed limit of 30mph.

“Sh “She l later said id h he was driving normally at first but then accelerated up to as high as 80mph to 90mph.

“Whatever her estimate, what he did was completely fail to take a gentle turn, collided with the kerb, struck a lamppost and propelled it 50 metres.

“The car slid along the road on its side and came to a stop. She had been in the passenger seat and fell across him.”

Mr Philo said neighbours who had heard the noise from the collision came out of their homes to help the woman.

But after crawling out of the wreckage Goodyer walked away, le leaving her at the scene.

Mr Philo said she was taken to hospital where she was treated for her injuries, which were “thankfully not as bad as they could have been”. He said: “She was saved by her seat belt”.

Mr Philo said the police found Goodyer, arrested him and a test saw him give a reading of 141 millilitres of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80. Goodyer also tested positive for drugs. He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, drink- driving and drug-driving.

As well as the jail sentence, Recorder Mann disqualified him from driving for three years.

Joe Harvey, mitigating, said: “He has a desire to help other people and has a 10-year-old daughter.”

She was in a lot of pain but you made off without reporting the collision.
