Moyes: Wayne has what it takes

-

DAVID Moyes knows Wayne Rooney better than most – and has backed the “drive and attitude” of Derby County’s new manager to translate into success in the dugout.

Rooney, 35, has been appointed on a full-time basis after an impressive stint as interim boss over the last two months.

The former England skipper has overseen nine matches in sole charge of the side following Philip Cocu’s exit, winning three, drawing four and losing two.

Rooney has focused solely on coach since then but yesterday’s appointment marks an official end to his player career.

Moyes, who gave him his debut aged 16 for Everton in 2002, said: “If he’s chosen to stop playing, I’m sure it’ll be for the right reasons because he wants his future to be in management.

“He’s going into a different world now completely and while not all the best players have gone on to be the best managers, Wayne’s love of the game and his drive and attitude will give him every chance of being successful.”

Asked if he had any words of wisdom for his former player, 57-year-old Moyes said: “Listen, look for advice, get help when you need it but be your own man. Wayne will certainly be that.

“I wish him luck, it’s a tough job he’s got at Derby at the moment but it’s a great opportunity for starting a football management career.”

Rooney burst on to the scene at Everton before moving to Manchester United, where he was reunited with Moyes in 2013 following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.

“I know him as a player and, as a boy, he was a tremendous young player,” said Moyes, now in charge of West Ham United.

“We were amazed with his ability being so young.

“We got him his debut and everybody knows his career – Manchester United leading goalscorer, England leading goalscorer. He’s had an incredible career.”
