Shouts for help at Peak District beauty spot lead to rescue call-out

-

A MOUNTAIN rescue team was called after people were heard shouting for help at a beauty spot in the Peak District.

Emergency services were called to Thor’s Cave in the Manifold Valley on Saturday afternoon after a member of the public heard someone calling for help.

West Midlands Ambulance Service and Derby Mountain Rescue Team rushed to the scene amid concern someone had been injured in the cave. One there they found a group of people from Stockport who had decided to enter the cave.

However, they had become stranded after leaving through ‘The Window’, a tricky exit route that left them stuck on a steep section of the hill.

Fortunately, by the time mountain rescue arrived, a member of the public had made their way up and was guiding the group safely down.

No one was injured, although the group was left “wet through, very tired, cold and shaken up”.

Derby Mountain Rescue Team said on its website it was called out to the incident at 4pm on Saturday.

The team added: “The party had travelled from Stockport to Wetton by car and walked to Thor’s Cave, unfortunately they left the cave via ‘The Window’ and quickly found themselves ‘cragfast’ on steep terrain.

“As the team arrived on scene, they liaised with the WMAS crew who had made verbal contact with the party, and informed us that a member of the public had ascended up to them and was leading them back down.

“Fortunately, at this point they made it down safely and were taken back to the WMAS Ambulance.

“There had been no injuries, but they were wet through, very tired, cold and shaken up by their ordeal.

“The team were stood down, with vehicles being returned to base and decontaminated ready for our next call-out.”
