BUILD YOUR VERY OWN ROBOT PAL
CREATIVE thinking is really important in lots of different jobs and, often, one of the best ways to learn is to experiment with materials.
Why not use your creativity to make a robot? This coineating character uses recycled materials so you can help the planet and save your pennies.
YOU WILL NEED
Two small cardboard boxes (we used a cube tissue box and a small variety pack cereal box); foil; coloured card or paper; objects for decorating (bottle tops, spare buttons, scraps of cord and ribbon, beads, drawing pins etc); scissors; glue; sticky tape; a pencil
METHOD
1. To make your robot’s head, make cuts down each corner of a small cereal box. Bend the sides up to make flaps.
2. Cut a slot for your robot’s mouth, making sure that it is large enough to post a £2 coin through. This part can be tricky so ask an adult for help if you are not sure.
3. Your tissue box should already have a hole in the top. If you are using a different small cardboard box, ask an adult to help you cut a hole in the top. The hole should be slightly smaller than your robot’s head. Tape your robot’s head onto its body.
4. Glue every side of your robot’s head and body and cover it in foil. Using the point of a pencil, poke through the foil to open its mouth. Don’t forget to cut a little access hatch in your robot’s back so you can empty it.
5. Hunt around the house for some bits and bobs to decorate your robot with. Drawing pins make excellent rivets and beads and buttons look fab as a control panel. We used the metal containers from tea lights for ears and scraps of curling ribbon for wires.
6. Finally, don’t forget to feed your robot with lots of shiny metal coins!
