Te Wierik returns to Holland

-

MIKE te Wierik has left Derby County to return to former club FC Groningen.

The 28-year-old joined the Rams on a free transfer in the summer but after making only six appearances he was allowed to return to the Netherlands, where he made almost 100 appearances for Groningen.

In a statement, Derby said an “undisclosed agreement” has been reached between the two clubs.

At the weekend, new manager Wayne Rooney said the player would leave with everyone’s best wishes.

“Mike te Wierik is going back to Holland, unfortunately it hasn’t quite worked out for him,” said Rooney.

“The one thing I can’t question is his attitude. He was there, encouraging the players.

“I know how difficult it must have been for him not being involved. I think it is a good move for him to go back to Holland.”

■■Former Derby County defender Richard Keogh has returned to the Championship, joining Huddersfield Town from MK Dons for the remainder of the season for an undisclosed fee.

Terriers head coach Carlos Corberan said: “Richard is a player with an amazing background and a lot of experience in the Championship. He has regularly played over 4,000 minutes per season at his previous clubs and you need the combination of his experience alongside our young players to create a competitive team.

“The competitive character he has and the respect he has for his job, are very important values within our group.

“He is a good defender and he can also help us to play out from the back. His ability to play on the left and right of central defence is something we need in the team, too.”
