Police drone shows true scale of the damage

-

POLICE drone footage has shown the true scale of flooding in Derbyshire after the River Derwent burst its banks.

Derbyshire police captured aerial video showing an “ocean” of water covering Darley Dale yesterday.

It comes after heavy rainfall from Storm Christoph fell in the Peak District, causing the waters of Derbyshire’s biggest river to swell.

The footage shows floodwater over numerous fields outside Darley Dale which only days ago were completely clear.

In a tweet, Derbyshire Constabulary Drone Unit said the force was still dealing with the flooding this afternoon.

They said: “We still have high flooding around areas of Derbyshire for our force and partner agencies to deal with.

“We have been out around Darley Dale where the River Derwent looks more like an ocean. Please be safe.”

The wet conditions have caused roads across the county to be closed, while the Environment Agency has issued numerous flood warnings along the length of rivers in Derbyshire.

These include several along the River Derwent, including in Derby itself, where Haslams Lane in Darley Abbey flooded overnight.

The water level of the Derwent is expected to reach its peak in the city between 4pm and 5pm on Thursday afternoon.

Meanwhile, in Doveridge residents told Derbyshire Live the flooding was the worst it had been for “at least 10 years”.
