Tributes to ‘kind’ lecturer killed in rail collision

-

“KIND and loyal” is how a Derbyshire lecturer and former RAF serviceman will be remembered following his death at the age of 48.

Richard Wilson, known as Richie, died on Friday, February 19 in a collision with a train at Dronfield station. Staff at Chesterfield College and a former student have spoken of the loss.

Ryan Shepherd, 24, a student of his for four years, said in a post on Facebook: “I can’t believe it. He had such an amazing sense of humour. He was one tutor everyone respected and admired at college. Strict but fair and definitely made everyone laugh at some point during their experience. He won’t be forgotten by anyone he taught. Rest easy, Richie.”

On the back of his service in the RAF, Mr Wilson became a lecturer in public services, providing knowledge to future police officers, firefighters and the armed forces.

Julie Richards, principal and chief executive of Chesterfield College, said: “Our thoughts are with Richie’s family and friends at this very sad time. He worked at the college for many years supporting students to develop their knowledge and skills in public services. More recently he worked as a workskills tutor where he had a significant impact on supporting students to build their confidence and return to work, securing employment opportunities for hundreds of local residents.

“His kindness, loyalty and commitment were incredible and he will be greatly missed by everyone at Chesterfield College.”
