1928: Ronnie Dix made history as the youngest player to score a goal in the Football League. He was 15 years and 180 days old when he netted for Bristol Rovers in their 3-0 win over Norwich City in a Third Division (South) match.
1991: Runcorn Highfield’s dismal record of 75 matches without a win ended when they beat Dewsbury. Their run – the worst in rugby league history – went back 28 months, during which time they had five coaches.
2000: More than 100,000 people lined the streets of Stoke as the funeral cortege of Sir Stanley Matthews passed through the city.
2002: Michael Schumacher launched his bid for a recordequalling fifth Formula One drivers’ crown with victory in an extraordinary Australian Grand Prix in which only eight cars crossed the finishing line.
2005: Former Holland coach Rinus Michels, who pioneered “total football”, died at the age of 77. 2011: Manchester City defender Kolo Toure was suspended after failing a drugs test. He was later banned for six months.
2014: South Africa captain Graeme Smith announced his retirement from international cricket, while former England team director Andy Flower was appointed as technical director of elite coaching at the England and Wales Cricket Board.
2015: Dave Whelan stepped aside as Wigan Athletic chairman, saying his decision was motivated by age as he handed the reins to 23-year-old grandson David Sharpe.
2017: Andrew Pozzi won gold in the 60 metres hurdles at the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Belgrade.
2018: England beat New Zealand by four runs in a thrilling one-day international at Wellington.
