QUOTES OF THE DAY

“I’m sure this Budget will look better on Instagram, in fact this week’s PR video cost the taxpayer so much I was half expecting to see a line in the OBR forecast for it” Labour leader Keir Starmer questions if the Chancellor is more interested in style than substance

“The Chancellor has gone above and beyond to protect UK businesses and people’s livelihoods through the crisis and get firms spending,”– Tony Danker, director-general of the CBI, said Mr Sunak had succeeded in protecting the economy.

“Have I missed the bit where the Chancellor announced a pay rise for health and social care workers? I suppose last year’s clapping will have to pay this year’s bills,”

Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner says the Budget lacked

provision for health workers

TWO South Derbyshire siblings are climbing Mount Everest - virtually to raise money for charity.

Jack and Amelie Broome, have set themselves the mammoth task of climbing the 29,000 feet to the top of the highest mountain in the world using the stairs of their home in Willington.

Two weeks into their challenge, they have already run up their stairs a huge 1,230 times, equating to more than 9,000ft climbed towards the Himalayan summit.

The brother and sister decided to raise money for both the NHS and the NSPCC, and quickly passed their first target.

Jack, 10, said: “We started off trying to raise £200, £100 for each charity, but we smashed that in a couple of days so now we are hoping to raise £500.

“Our mum is a nurse, and we know how hard she has been working during the Covid pandemic, so we wanted to do something to help out.

“It’s been hard, but once you’ve got used to it, it’s quite good fun.”

Amelie, seven, added: “I wanted to raise money for the NSPCC to help out children who aren’t as lucky as us.

“It’s quite tiring, but good, too.” Mum Jo Broome, who has been working in the Intensive Care Unit at Royal Derby Hospital during the pandemic, added: “The kids have done brilliantly.

“Some days they go up and down the stairs 100 times, which is just incredible.

“We might need a new carpet by the time this is done though!”

By the time they complete their challenge, by the end of March, the youngsters will have climbed a whopping 58,000 steps.
