Woman who racially abused girl, 10, jailed

-

A WOMAN shouted vile racist abuse at a 10-year-old girl who complained she had woken her up in the middle of the night.

Samantha Southall, of Shannon Square, Chaddesden, called the child a “**** **** ” before threatening to smash windows of the house she was in, when the girl’s mum complained about what was said.

Derby Crown Court heard when police attempted to arrest her later in the evening, she resisted before threatening to let one of her dogs loose on them. She was eventually detained and taken into custody, where she continued to be abusive to officers.

Southall pleaded guilty to racially aggravated harassment, threatening to damage property and obstructing a constable in their duty. The court heard she was also on a suspended sentence for a previous offence which saw her assault a woman. Judge Jonathan Bennett activated four weeks of the suspended sentence and also gave her an extra four weeks for her most recent offence. The court heard the 32-year-old had been drinking on July 19, last year, when she lost her mobile phone.

Stephen Kemp, prosecuting, said: “She had mislaid her phone at some stage, she thought someone she had been in the pub with had it. She later found it at home.”

The court heard it was around 10pm when Southall was seen shouting at the property where the person she thought had taken the phone was staying. This woke up a 10-year-old girl who had gone to bed earlier in the evening.

Mr Kemp said: “The girl was awoken by the defendant shouting and said ‘shush, people are trying to sleep’. The defendant responded ‘shut you you **** **** ’. This was heard by the girl’s mother who complained. Southall left, but came back, called them “fat ******* ” and threatened to smash the windows.

The woman called the police, who went to Southall’s address and spoke to her over the fence. After a confrontation where she denied what had happened, Southall told someone in her house to let her two large dogs out. When taken to custody she continued to be abusive. When asked about the racial abuse she said it “wouldn’t be something she would say”.

Simon Stevens QC, mitigating said: “She is thoroughly ashamed of this as she comes from a very multi-cultural background and apologises to all of those involved.”

Southall was jailed for eight weeks
