HEALTH Secretary Matt Hancock has praised Derby’s roll-out of the Covid vaccines in a special message to the city. Mr Hancock gave a “massive thank you” for the “incredible” work being done to help keep people safe.

PRAISE has been poured on Derby for the way it has operated during the Covid-19 vaccine rollout.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock says the city is above the national average for the number of Covid vaccinations that have been given.

He revealed the news in a video message directed to the people of Derby which was published on Derby North MP Amanda Solloway’s Facebook page.

According to the Health Secretary, in Derby “two in five of the whole population have now been vaccinated.”

The 95-second video sees Mr Hancock urge other people to get the vaccine as it helps stop the spread of coronavirus and helps communities like Derby return to a more normal life.

He also used his address to thank a number of people and organisations.

Mr Hancock said: “I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone across Derby for the incredible work they are doing in getting the vaccines rolled out.

“In Derby two in five of the whole population have now been vaccinated. It’s ahead of the national average. You are doing it absolutely brilliantly.

“I know Amanda Solloway is helping get the message out the vaccine is good for you because it will help keep you safe.

“It’s good for your community because it will lower the risk you can pass on the disease and it is good for all of us because it will help us to get out of this.”

Mr Hancock also gave thanks to all the NHS teams in Derby and Derbyshire hospitals, as well as staff running testing centres in Derby such as the Riverside Centre at Pride Park and Sussex Circus, in Chaddesden.

However the Health Secretary warned “there’s a lot more to do” after it was reported there were still dozens of areas across the county with coronavirus infection rates still far above England’s national average. An interactive map, pub

lished by the Government, shows 43 areas across the county are above the national average in the seven days to March 10.

Derby City Centre boasted a few areas which were below the average, including Rosehill which was previously a hotspot, but Littleover,

Normanton, Sinfin, Mackworth, Mickleover, Allenton, Osmaston and Spondon were all above the average.

Mr Hancock added: “This has been an effort which has brought together people from local authorities, the council officers, the NHS and volunteers of huge numbers and I am very grateful to all of you for the incredible work you’ve done so far.

“There’s a lot more to do, but we’re making great progress.”
