Six weeks of disruption on the cards at Spider Island

BUSY ROUNDABOUT IS SET TO BE RESURFACED

UP to six weeks of major roadworks are to take place at Spider Island from later this month.

Derby City Council is to resurface the busy Allenton roundabout, also known as Mitre Island, with work starting on Monday, March 29.

All of the approaches to the roundabout, from Osmaston Park Road, Harvey Road, Osmaston Road, and Chellaston Road, will also be resurfaced as part of the project.

Work will be under way between 8am and 5pm on weekdays, and is expected to be completed by Friday, May 7.

During each phase of the work, sections of the roundabout and some approaches to it will be closed to traffic, during which times signed diversion routes will be in operation.

Residents and businesses will be able to access their properties at all times, however there may be a short delay at certain stages of resurfacing works.

The upcoming works at Spider Island are part of a two-year city-wide resurfacing scheme.

A year into the city council’s highways project, work has so far been completed on a number of key routes, including Normanton Road, Ascot Drive, and Chaddesden Park Road.

Around 20 miles of roads in the city have been resurfaced, with the next project set to start at the Warwick Avenue roundabout next week. Councillor Jonathan Smale, city council cabinet member for communities, public protection and Streetpride, said: “A huge amount of work has taken place so far and the positive impacts of the investment are clear to see.

“We know that having well-maintained roads is so important to our residents and our roads are a very valuable asset for the city and so, it’s only right that we properly invest in them. “There is a really ambitious plan of work for the year ahead that means we’ll be doing the right work at the right time to safeguard our roads and footways well into the future.

“In some cases, that means completely resurfacing an area, in other cases it’s about taking preventative action to stop us having to repeatedly patch an area which ultimately causes more disruption and costs more, too.”
