Regulars said they were saddened by the news. One said: “It was definitely the best Indian for miles. It is a shame, so many businesses have fallen in these very trying times.”

Others said it was their go-to restaurant for anniversary and birthday meals out.

Firefighter Kevin Tedds, who lives in the town, said: “I am sad to see them go as I thought they might get through the Covid pandemic, as it always seems so busy and popular.

“I’ve had some great times there, my 20-year medal celebrations, birthdays, you name it. The lads who work there are brilliant and the food amazing. I used to joke with the lads at work, saying that if I didn’t ring Akbar’s once a month, they’d ring me to see if I was okay.

“I am sad they didn’t make it, though. I know lots of people will Stapleford councillor Richard MacRae said: “I’m so sad to read it is closing. I wish them the best for the future.”
