Taylor: We made it hard for ourselves with late start

-

TERRY Taylor acknowledged that Burton Albion got going too late in their 2-1 defeat to Milton Keynes Dons.

The 19-year-old midfielder made his second start for the Brewers and caught the eye with strongly-delivered free kicks and corners but he knew both he and the team came up short on the day.

“We started our tempo too late. It was the second half really before we laid a glove on them and started to press them and win the ball back high,” said Taylor.

“Starting late like that, you’ll always make it hard for yourself.”

Taylor, signed permanently from Wolves in January and marked as “one for the future” by manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, has also made five substitute appearances for the Brewers.

“I’m really enjoying it. I’ve been building myself up to this, working hard in training, trying to catch the eye of the manager and he’s given me a chance the last two weekends,” said Taylor, who was born in Scotland but is a Wales Under-21 international, his mother having been born in Wales.

“I want more of that, I want to keep improving. I think there’s a lot more to come. I want to up my game, especially from today.”

On taking the set-pieces, he added: “It’s something I’ve always worked on, I think I’ve always had a decent delivery.

“I enjoy taking them and it fills me with confidence that the manager has that belief in me.”

Taylor did not start the season expecting to be on a permanent deal with any club other than Wolves – until Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink persuaded him that a move to Burton could boost his career in the game.

He had been on loan with Grimsby Town in League Two but was recalled when the permanent transfer to the Brewers was mooted.

“I started off in the summer and my main goal was to press and do as well as I could and ultimately go back to Wolves and try to get in the first team there,” he said.

“As the season went on, obviously, it didn’t work out like that. There was always interest and then I spoke to Jimmy and agreed to come.

“It wasn’t what I had expected but the way it’s worked out, I’m really pleased.

“The main thing is to come here and try to get myself into the starting line-up every week. Then we’ll see what happens.”

Taylor misses tomorrow’s game against Shrewsbury Town as he joins up with the Wales Under-21 squad for a friendly against the Republic of Ireland.
