Workmates

- By Lin Freeman

In 2020 I reached my goal

Of staying on pharmacy register till I grew old!

Fifty long years have marched on by Since I gained that necessary mark high. Queen Elizabeth Children’s was the start. Then off to Guy’s Hospital to play my part. Such an ancient department hidden below stairs

With an array of old specimens and unusual wares.

Twas the time of power cuts and restricted supply.

Working by candlelight was hard on the eye. Along the basement tunnels, below the floor Little motorised vehicles passed with a roar. Whenever possible we hitched a ride Pretending it was urgent to get to the other side!

Time moved on with its ups and downs Combining an equal mix of smiles and frowns. Eventually Boots beckoned and away I went. Twelve years with them was time well spent. There I forged friendships still with me today. The Christmas cabarets made it that way. Pharmacy and Baby were simply the best. Even when routines were a bit of a mess. Workmates move on, they come and they go. If I stood them together, they would be many a row.

I’ve been to their weddings, seen there children grow.

Attended the funerals when tears did flow. Each one is special in their own way

And they’ve made my tasks easier from day to day.

It’s such a pleasure to see young ones flourish

And so important their needs to nourish. So this year I hope to celebrate

The same achievement of a workmate: He reaches that magical 50 years too

And definitely deserves a ‘bit of a do’! Congratulations Phillip
