Online smash hit Discos for Grown Ups heading for a dance floor in city

-

AFTER a year of weekly streamed discos to thousands of locked down living rooms all over the world, Discos for Grown Ups is heading to a real dance floor in Derby later this summer.

The music and fun went online during lockdown with vinyl DJ Simon Stanford at the turntables, but now he’s gearing up to tour, including a date in the city, playing the best soul, disco and pop tunes from the 70s, 80s and 90s.

Simon started Discos For Grown Ups in 2017 after he DJ’d his own birthday party. He said: “It was founded after finding there was nowhere to go to have a great night of dancing if you’re over 40. Where do you go if you’re too old to go clubbing, but you still love to dance?

“I kept getting asked to do friends’ parties then I progressed to doing my own nights and festivals.”

During lockdown the weekly online discos went global, with thousands dancing in their living rooms to feelgood classics from Erasure, Human League, Chaka Khan, Soft Cell, Madonna and Motown streamed live on Facebook and YouTube.

“I’ve now got more than 10,000 followers on Facebook plus thousands on YouTube. I get people from all over the world coming to my online discos - LA, Mexico, South Africa, Spain, Chile and Denmark,” said the ex-record industry executive.

Discos for Grown Ups will be heading to Derby Conference Centre Ballroom in London Road on Friday, August 20.

Early bird tickets are £12.50 (£14 at a later date) available from wegottickets.com/discosforgrownups with a guarantee of refunds if the event is cancelled, postponed or rescheduled.

Before the pandemic Simon, who lives in Blidworth, Nottinghamshire, was holding regular pop-up parties across the UK. He is also the resident vinyl DJ at Chris Evans’ Car Fest North and South events.
