A DRUNK teenager threatened to stab a pub landlord who had refused him entry as he was not wearing a Covid mask.

Daniel Boyes told the victim “I am going to come back later and shank you” before being grabbed and held by the victim.

As he did so, the 19-year-old kneed the man to the groin before allowing him to remove a silverhandled blade he had on him.

Jailing the teenager for 10 months, suspended for two years, Recorder Stuart Sprawson said: “You went to the pub and tired to get in, but the landlord was just going about his job responsibly saying you could only come in if you were wearing a mask due to Covid.

“He was going about his business in a socially aware way thinking about the safety of you and others, but you were not receptive to that and said you were going to “shank” him and “shank” means stab.

“Those who carry knives endanger others, but you are still young, you have no previous convictions and the probation service say there is a realistic prospect of rehabilitating you.” Laura Hocknell, prosecuting, said the incident took place at 2.30pm on July 24, last year, after the Government allowed pubs to re-open following the first lockdown. She said the defendant, of Burton, tried to get into the Lamb in Main Street, Newhall, but was refused entry as he was not wearing a mask.

Miss Hocknell said that is when he made the threat to stab the landlord.

She said: “In his police interview he said he had drank a bottle of rum and was very drunk.

“He apologised saying it was completely out of character and that he carried the knife for protection. He accepted he assaulted the landlord and he was remorseful.”

Boyes, of Duke Street, pleaded guilty to possession of a knife, making threats to a person he would use the weapon and assault. He has no previous convictions.

Nick Walsh, mitigating, said his client pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and had no intention of using the knife.

He said: “This was certainly not planned and he was fully cooperative with the police.

“He tells me a group of males had been targeting him and he naively thought that by arming himself that would stop this approaching him.

“He had consumed too much alcohol and had actually gone to the pub not to consume more but to use the toilet. He got a bit cocky and was showing off.”

As well as the suspended sentence Recorder Sprawson handed Boyes a two-month curfew confining him to his home address each night between 8pm and 7pm.

He also ordered him to carry out 15 rehabilitation sessions with the probation service. group from
