1967: Foinavon became a 100-1 winner of the Grand National at Aintree. He avoided a pile-up at the 23rd fence, which caused most of the field to fall or refuse, to come home a comfortabl­e winner.

1990: Nick Faldo won his second successive Masters title. For the second year running, the competitio­n went to a play-off, Faldo again winning at the second extra hole, this time at the expense of Raymond Floyd.

2002: The Scottish Premier League’s plan to launch its own television channel collapsed. The SPL had hoped to set up a station after rejecting BSkyB’s offer to broadcast its games live but the 12 top-flight clubs failed to agree on proposals.

2003: On the day Manchester United were humbled 3-1 by Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, Sir Alex Ferguson was charged by UEFA with bringing the game into disrepute following his claim the Champions League draw was fixed.

2012: Sir Chris Hoy won gold in the men’s keirin at the Track Cycling World Championsh­ips in Melbourne. 2015: Paul Downton left his position as managing director of England Cricket.

2017: Nicola Adams sailed through her profession­al debut with a shut-out 40-36 points win over Virginia Carcamo of Argentina at the Manchester Arena.

2018: Patrick Reed won the Masters, finishing one stroke ahead of fellow American Rickie Fowler at Augusta. Rory McIlroy, who had been second overnight, faded to finish in joint fifth on nine under, six shots behind Reed.

2019: Former England rugby union winger Christian Wade signed a deal with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills.

2020: Premier League stars joined forces to create an initiative called £PlayersTog­ether, which aimed to raise funds with their partner, NHS Charities Together.
