Rochdale end long wait for home victory

-

LEAGUE One bottom club Rochdale grabbed a lifeline with a 2-1 home win over fellow strugglers Swindon Town on Tuesday night.

It was Dale’s first home win in six months and while they are still a point behind Swindon and five from safety, they have a game in hand on the four clubs above them.

Jimmy Keohane and Conor Grant had them 2-0 up before Jordan Garrick’s 88th-minute goal for Swindon, who have lost four in a row.

Wigan Athletic nudged a point above the safety line with a 2-1 win over Sunderland to follow up their 4-1 win over Doncaster Rovers.

Charlie Wyke had put the Black Cats ahead but Will Keane and Callum Lang scored either side of halftime.

Wimbledon are also making a strong move towards safety, following up their 5-1 beating of Accrington Stanley with a 3-0 home win over Ipswich Town.

The Dons were already 2-0 up through Will Nightingale and Jack Rudoni before Ipswich had Josh Harrop sent off in the 28th minute and Ryan Longman added a late

third.

A 4-1 defeat for Shrewsbury Town, away to Oxford United, allowed Burton Albion to overtake the Shrews and move into 17th place with their win over Doncaster Rovers.

Robert Atkinson, Elliot Lee, Matty Taylor and Sam Long scored for Oxford, with Harry Chapman replying.

In the promotion race, Lincoln City ended a six-game run without a win by beating MK Dons 4-0.

Nottingham Forest loanee Brennan Johnson scored an 11-minute second-half hat-trick before Andrew Fisher put through his own goal to make it four.

Portsmouth and Crewe Alexandra drew 0-0, as did Blackpool and Accrington.

Stanley’s Colby Bishop missed an 87th-minute penalty which could have won it.
