Tom’s Mission in local quarry: they’re almost set for action

IT’S been something which has been on the lips of people in Stoney Middleton for months... when will Tom Cruise arrive to film his Mission: Impossible stunt in their village?

Now more details have been revealed. In recent days the site of the train crash, which will see the locomotive drive off the edge of a cliff and into Darlton Quarry, has become a hive of activity ever since the train itself arrived on the set on Saturday, August 14.

Now, according to a document that has been sent to Stoney Middleton residents and seen by the Derby Telegraph, a breakdown of what is going to happen in the next few weeks has been revealed.

Over the next few days, rehearsals are to take place before the big stunt, believed to involve Tom Cruise, on Saturday, September 4, between 6am and 7pm.

Today and tomorrow, rehearsals will take place all day. Nothing about the stunt has been confirmed, although we spoke to people around the set on Tuesday – and they told us they believed the train would plunge off the track and into the quarry.

A big pool has been dug at the bottom of the quarry with water added, where the train is understood to be plunging. In addition, large trees, taken from the Chatsworth estate, have also been installed under the end of the railway line. However, getting a good look at the stunt might be a bit tricky.

Documents have also been released by Derbyshire County Council showing which public footpaths and bridleways will be closed surrounding the disused quarry from today, until to Saturday, September 4. It is claimed the routes will be off-limits “to allow for health and safety during filming works. The bridleway will reopen as soon as the work is finished”.

Once filming is complete it will bring the curtain down on Mission: Impossible’s stay in Stoney Middleton which had been due to draw to a close some months ago.

The pandemic, however, caused delays in filming, resulting in the scene being shot in a few weeks’ time.
