Bomb squad carry out controlled explosion of WWII device in Peak

THE bomb squad had to be called out to the Peak District after a device from the Second World War was found in a Derbyshire Village.

Western Power Distribution said some of their workers made the discovery of an unexploded World War Two German bomb in Earl Sterndale.

Many German bombs were dropped in Derbyshire during the 1939-1945 conflict and the vast majority of them detonated when they landed, but others that did not go off have been found since the end of the war.

As a result of the find, the bomb squad was called and made a preliminary assessment of the device before returning the following day.

They confirmed the bomb was live, set up a cordon around it and carried out a controlled explosion.

In a post on their Facebook page, Western Power Distribution said: “This unexploded Second World War bomb was found by our contractors working at Earl Sterndale in the Derbyshire Peak District this week.

“Unexploded devices from this period are relatively common in some of the cities in our region but

they are a more unusual discovery in Derbyshire villages.

“The bomb squad made a preliminary assessment of the find and cordoned off the area with a police guard. They then returned the following day, confirming the bomb

was live and detonating it safely. Thankfully, our work to dig and lay new electricity cables is usually much less explosive.

“And, if you’re interested in a bit of Second World War history, Earl Sterndale is the only village in Derbyshire

to have had its church damaged by a German bomb. It happened as part of a raid in 1941, which is believed to have been targeting either a large ammunition dump at Harpur Hill or a submarine battery factory at Bakewell.”
