10 city roads face car ban during school run

- By NIGEL SLATER

AT LEAST 10 roads have been targeted for traffic bans during school-run times in Derby.

The move has been triggered by parents causing chaos near schools when they drop off and pick up their children.

Derby City Council has plans in place to ban traffic during certain hours in Alvaston Street, near St John Fisher Primary School, in Alvaston.

And it has now been confirmed that similar measures could be proposed for a number of other roads in the city

TRAFFIC blocking to prevent school parking chaos could be implemented on at least 10 Derby roads.

Last week, the Local Democracy Reporting Service reported that a plan was in place for motor vehicles to be banned at school run times on Alvaston Street, in Alvaston, near St John Fisher Primary School.

A public consultation on Derby City Council plans to address school parking problems at a number of city schools remains ongoing.

With particular reference to Alvaston Street, the city council says during site visits it has seen chaos on the roads, with drivers mounting pavements and parents and pupils being hit by manoeuvring vehicles near the school - forcing the authority to look at road safety options.

The city council proposes to address this problem and increase safety by implementing new traffic orders on roads across Derby at certain times of the day.

Details of the Alvaston Street “traffic ban” were reported following an email received by a local councillor.

A city council spokesperson has confirmed similar traffic bans could be in place on other Derby roads close to other schools.

On further investigation, it can now be revealed the other roads which could have new traffic bans within school run times are:

Bromley Street and Newtons Walk (close to Markeaton Primary School)

Redwood Road (close to Redwood Primary School)

Thornhill Road and Church Street (close to St Peter’s Junior School)

Reginald Street (close to Rosehill Infants and St James Junior School)

Uplands Avenue and Gayton Avenue (close to Gayton Ridgeway and St George Primary Schools)

Alvaston Street (close to St John Fisher Primary School)

Vicarage Avenue (close to Mickleover Primary School)

There are also plans for a 24-hour one-way system and a no-entry sign for Vicarage Road.

Decisions on whether traffic bans will be implemented on these roads are yet to be made.

A spokesperson for the city council said: “Alvaston Street and other locations are being consulted on so the results will determine if they are implemented.”

The consultation expires on September 12. Details can be found at https://www.derby.gov.uk/counciland-democracy/consultations/ latest-consultations.
