Thanks for saving Charlie

Grieving parents can’t afford to pay for dog’s surgery after losing daughter and tackling £40k in debts

A DOG owner has thanked Derby Telegraph readers for their generosity after their donations helped to pay for an operation that saved his pet’s life.

Robert Moore was facing medical bills of thousands of pounds after his dog, Charlie, developed a benign tumour on her front paw.

Mr Moore bought the fiveyear-old dobermann in 2018 but could not afford to pay for her surgery. He set up a GoFundMe page after being unable to access help from pet charities.

But after a Derby Telegraph article he received donations of £2,400 which helped pay for the £850 operation, antibiotics and continuing treatment.

Charlie is now expected to make a full recovery thanks to the “superb” team at Paw Print Vets in Station Road in Mickleover, with her dressings changed every few days to prevent reinfection.

Mr Moore, from Oakwood, said: “I would have lost the dog without these donations. It’s been brilliant, you couldn’t wish for better. “We’re not out of the woods yet, until the leg has completely healed. “We’re a month in now and it could go on for another month, so we need to be careful, but they’ve saved the dog’s leg as several people were talking about removing the leg. “Charlie has even accepted having to wear the cone, whereas before she was sulking.

“The vets have been really, really good. She doesn’t mind at all what they do to her.”

The donations included two worth £500 and £1,000, but Mr Moore and his wife Diane have said

they plan to spend whatever money is left on helping others who cannot pay for their pets’ operations.

They say it is the least they can do to help people who have helped them, after serious concerns that the dog may have had to be put down.

Seeing Charlie recover has also been a welcome boost to Robert’s mood as he recovers from a stay in hospital after developing a form of bacterial pneumonia in July.

He said: “They helped us when we needed help.

“People suggested on some of the comments that we will retire and go to the Bahamas, which is totally ridiculous!

“I would love to help somebody else as there must be lots of people out there who have got sick cats and dogs, and I’m quite happy to donate the money to more than one person because there will hopefully be a fair bit left.

“As soon as we’re finished with all this, we’ll be looking to see who needs help.”

I would have lost the dog without these donations. It’s been brilliant, you couldn’t wish for better. Robert Moore
