Offender hurled vile abuse and threats at workers who were trying to help him

A CRIMINAL meted out horrific abuse and threats to professionals who were trying to help him.

Patrick Mangan’s terrifying catalogue of calls to support workers and probation officers included telling one woman “I hope you get raped tonight and murdered”.

The 39-year-old, of Littleover, told another woman “I’m going to **** your dead granny, you fat **** ” and then threatened to “cut the heart out” of another victim’s mother while she watched.

Jailing him for a total of 12 months, Judge Nirmal Shant QC said: “There were a number of occasions when to say your behaviour was deeply unpleasant and threatening is an understatement.

“It is right to say that the probation officers and support worker who have to deal with you perhaps tolerate you more than they do others but you went well beyond the acceptable bounds, moving on to becoming menacing and threatening.”

Mark Knowles, prosecuting, said in December 2020 Mangan was convicted of assaulting a fellow resident at the supported living home where they were both staying in Trowels Lane, Derby. He said on that occasion, the defendant also ripped a TV from the wall, causing more than £400 of damage.

Mr Knowles said that after being handed a 12-month community order in January for those offences, Mangan then started phoning his offender manager and support workers whose roles are to assist him with his mental health issues, medication and other social needs.

He said: “On July 7, on one call, he told his offender manager ‘I will spit in your face and bite your nose off and I will put a knife in someone until it goes through them.’

“On July 15 there was a similar scenario on another call when he threatened to kill someone else.

“On July 19 his behaviour continued when he made various calls to support workers telling one ‘I hope you get raped tonight and murdered.’

“He met another support worker in a cafe and then followed her down the road saying ‘I will **** your dead granny you fat **** .’ “And on another call, on July 23, he told another female support worker ‘I am going to find your mum and cut her heart out while you watch.’”

Mangan, of Hall Park Close, pleaded guilty to malicious communication and breaching his community order.

Benn Robinson, mitigating, said his client was “a complex individual who requires the assistance of multiple agencies”.

He said: “The communication was unpleasant, he was frustrated at the way his finances were being handled and he reacted in this wholly unacceptable way. He has been in custody since July 29 and he has found it difficult.”
